Solang Valley (Solang Nala) is a glacial valley 14 km north of Manali in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, at ~2,480 m altitude on the road to the Atal Tunnel and Lahaul. It hosts skiing and snowboarding in winter and paragliding, zorbing, and cable-car rides in summer, making it HP's most versatile adventure spot.

Manali's All-Season Adventure Playground — Ski in Winter, Fly in Summer
A Glimpse into History
Origins – Shepherd's Summer Pasture
Solang (also written Solang Nala) was historically a seasonal pasture used by Gaddi shepherds who brought their flocks up the valley in summer. The name "Solang" is a corruption of a local Pahari term meaning "a confluence of streams." The valley feeds the Beas River.
Evolution – HP Tourism Opens Ski Slope
HP Tourism identified Solang's consistent winter snowfall and 300 m vertical drop as ideal for a public ski slope in the late 1980s. A ski lift and equipment rental were established, making it one of the few organised ski areas in India accessible to beginners without specialist gear.
Modern Era – Atal Tunnel Gateway
The opening of the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel) in 2020 placed Solang Valley as the last major stop before the tunnel's north portal. Traffic surged dramatically as the tunnel made Lahaul accessible year-round for the first time in history, boosting Solang's visitor numbers by an estimated 400%.
Significance
Solang Valley sits at the entrance to the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km) — the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft. The valley's north-facing slope holds snow from November to April. The Beas Kund glacial lake trek (5 km one-way from Solang) is one of the most popular moderate treks near Manali, reaching 3,540 m.
Festivals & Events
Winter Ski Season (Dec–Mar)
HP Tourism runs organised ski and snowboard courses on the 300 m slope. January's Winter Carnival based in Manali includes skiing demonstrations at Solang, drawing national-level skiers and competitive participants.
Summer Adventure Festival (May–Jun)
Manali and Solang host a joint summer adventure festival with paragliding competitions launching from Solang ridge, zorbing races, mountain biking, and rappelling events — all at peak tourist season coinciding with school holidays.
Did You Know?
Solang Valley's cable car (gondola) lifts visitors to 2,480 m — from there, on clear days, you can see four different glaciers simultaneously: the Beas Kund glacier, Duhangan glacier, Pativala glacier, and Hampta Pass ice field. This multi-glacier panorama from a single vantage point is unique in the Kullu Valley.
